Areas of interest

This 800 metre mountain and its foothills are of particular interest to the orchid enthusiast. The road from Apollona to Eleousa takes one up and over the mountain and through large areas of (predominantly woodland) habitat that hosts numerous species of Orchid. Ophrys lucis, Ophrys ataviria, Ophrys reinholdii, Ophrys rhodia, Ophrys dodekanensis, Ophrys calypsus, O. cornutula, Ophrys apollonae, Ophrys polycrates, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys oreas.

*
Katavia

This small town is situated in the south of the island and the surrounding garrigue in all directions is orchid rich territory. The town is at the centre of the area notable as the extremely limited distribution hub of the tiny Pseudophrys, Ophrys parvula. The verges along the northbound road towards Mesanagros are especially productive, particularly in the area around the small church of St Nicholas some 5 kms out of town. The meandering road leading from Ag Pavlos towards the coast at Plimmiri is equally rewarding. Ophrys parvula, Ophrys halia, Ophrys persephonae, Ophrys cornutula, Ophrys cressa, Ophrys candica, Ophrys regis-fernandii, Ophrys colossaea, Serapias carica, Anacamptis papilionacea ssp aegea.

+ Embonas

This is a town situated in the foothills to the north of Mount Attaviros. This area of north facing slopes is rich in orchids and can be accessed by numerous tracks that lead southwards from the main Embonas/Sianos road, through semi cultivated fields up to the garrigue and woodland that occupy the lower slopes. Ophrys candica, Ophrys halia, Ophrys cressa, Ophrys attaviria, Ophrys polyxo, Ophrys sitiaca, Cephalanthera epipactoides, Anacamptis laxiflora.

*Ag Isidoros

This is a town situated on the south eastern flank of Mount Attaviros directly across the mountain from Embonas. Suitable, uncultivated areas of land on the road leading eastwards to Laerma can produce good numbers of orchids. Ophrys rhodia, Ophrys luecadica, Ophrys candica, Ophrys reinholdii, Orchis anatolica, Anacamptis sancta.

*Profitou Ilia Koskinou Monastery

This temple is situated to the north west of the Thermes Kalithea springs on the north east coast of the island. some 8 kilometres north of the heavily and appallingly developed district of Faliraki.
The large area of garrigue that surrounds this monastery and particularly that to the north east, opposite the Kalithea Horizon Royal Hotel is productive orchid territory. Ophrys saliarisii, Ophrys rhodia, Ophrys candia, Ophrys colossaea, Ophrys leucadica, Ophrys calypsus, Anacamptis sancta.
